Fruits & Veggies - Eat a Rainbow of Colors

You may have heard it's a good idea to eat a variety of colors or the rainbow of colors when it comes to fruits & veggies but why?

Fruits and vegetables that are different colors also have different phytonutrients so you will want to eat a variety so you can get all the benefits.  Consider these:

  • Orange & dark green veggies contain beta-carotene to boost the immune system and help with vision.  Choose items like sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, spinach or kale.
  • Anthocyanidins are found in red and purple fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, blackberries, red onions, or radishes and may offer vascular benefits.
  • Red fruits & vegetables like tomatoes, watermelon or red peppers contain lycopene which may improve heart health.
  • Leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach and Brussels sprouts contain luetin which may help eye and heart health.

Its best to aim for a variety of colors each day to reap the benefits.  Also, opt for whole fruits and vegetables over a supplement of sorts - there are other phytochemicals and nutrients you will find the produce that you will be missing if you only take a pill.
