Drink Up!

Are you drinking enough water? Staying hydrated offers your body many benefits including:

  • body temperature regulation
  • curb appetite
  • brain function
  • removal of waste
  • lubricate and protect joints
  • spine protection

Are there other sources to help with hydration besides water? Fruits, other beverages, and soups are examples of water sources.  It's a good idea to limit sugar-sweetened beverages to avoid extra, empty calories.  If you feel like you are in a rut with drinking water, try adding citrus wedges or other fruit to add flavor.

How much water do I need to drink?  Aim for 64 fluid ounces or 8 cups of water each day.  If you are physically active, ill with a fever or stomach flu-like symptoms, or experiencing warmer weather shoot to drink more water.

How can I tell if I'm drinking enough water? The pliability of skin is a good indicator of being hydrated.  The color of your urine is also an indicator.  A hydrated person's urine should be the shade of Crystal Light lemonade or pale yellow post-it note.  The darker the shade, the more concentrated it is indicating dehydration.
